Aleuritic acid (9,10,16-trihydroxy-palmitic acid) is a major constituent acid (~35%) of lac resin (shellac). It is isolated from the resin and mainly used in the perfumery industry, as a starting material for the preparation of "musk" aroma compounds as well as medicinal and bioactive compounds. Recently, aleuritic acid has been proposed as a substitute for alpha-hydroxy acids, which are widely used in skin care formulations. These compounds help sensitive skin to rebuild its defense mechanisms through quenching of free radicals and are therefore Aleuritic acid employed in sun protection lotions/creams, anti-aging preparations, anti-wrinkle preparations. Mixtures of aleuritic acid esters and amines have similar effects.
